You need to put in something along the lines of:
';We accept no design responsibility on the project and have already stressed (whatever it is, better foundations, using bricks as opposed to mud, whatever!) that we feel is insufficient on this project. We will continue at your own risk';
Make sure in your order that they write something along the lines of ';We understand that (your name) holds no design responsibility of this project and have acted on our design';.
This should keep you out of the courtroom.
Can you let me know what the project / alteration is?
** Amended 11.41 **
It is our recommendation that the entire ceiling is replaced however, we will act on your advice and attempt to reinforce the installation with screws. We do stress that this is not a satisfactory resolve to the problem though will act as instructed.
If you are registered as a NHBC (i think it is? Sorry i'm a HVCA man) state that you have a legal responsibility to recommend the replacement of the ceiling.
Perhaps even give them a call to see what their take is on the issue?
