I have visited England 2 times and want to live there. What do I need to do first?Any advice for someone from the US who want to move to London?
Well the money conversion thing is actually not true.
I was married to a brit for 15 years and I have been to London at least a dozen times.
Regarding money. The british pound will cost 1.70 US.
When you live in England you will find many things different and the same.
Same:
If you buy a computer in the US and pay 1000 dollars you should expect to pay 1000 pounds for the same thing.
Different:
When you get a job? Job security is so much better because
it is more difficult to let an employee go.
Just as the US has tightened their immigration laws, the UK has as well. You need to ensure that you have permission to not only stay, but without the right clearances you will not be able to rent or buy a home, or buy a car.
You will find it difficult to establish a credit rating in the UK. Credit rating system is totally different and does not relie on the american system. In the UK, it is based on your address and your government health card number.
Make sure you check into these aspects before making the decision. Healthcare, housing, employment, credit rating, etc.
Good luck.Any advice for someone from the US who want to move to London?
make 2 million dollars
cuz once you get to london and convert ur money
itll be half
and then you will have 1 million pounds
so hold tight and work two jobs, and live with your parents so u odnt have to pay rent!
Only advice I have is... DO IT, you wont regret it, we are a friendly bunch really, and you can live in or around London in some good places
Enjoy, drop a line when you come over!
Hi, Here's what I always pass along!
Wow...you're in for a treat! Wear good walking shoes because London is a superb walking city. Bring a good map of the city and begin. Be a happy tourist and first hop on one of the major red double decker tour buses which afford you a perfect overview of London and you can ';hop on and off'; as often as you please...some for two days! I love www.theoriginaltour.com ! Highlights (see www.londonwalks.com): National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, Tate Modern Museum, London Eye, Covent Gardens (great shops n restaurants), St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, see a play!, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Tower of London.
Know London has many beautiful parks which can be your oasis when needing a rest. Kensington Gardens in one of the world's wealthiest areas - See Princess Di's Kensington Palace and shop Kensington High St. and wander up Church St. for boutiques and such. Nearby: Royal Albert Hall, Science Museum, Natural History Museum and Victoria %26amp; Albert Museum. Hyde Park connects to Kensington Gardens. Explore Chelsea for boutiques as well. St. James Park - beautiful, sole restaurant inside. Green Park - high tea at the Ritz, Fortnum %26amp; Mason, Picadilly Circus (think Times Square). Shopping streets: Oxford, Bond, check for weekly markets...BUY ';TIMEOUT LONDON'; weekly magazine. Boat trip on the Thames - a must. Don't forget - you can take the EUROSTAR Chunnel train to Brussels or Paris for day trips (2.5 hrs +/- each way!) Hope this helps. Have a fantastic time! :)
'Nana Bean' is 100% correct, you must be really loaded to move to London from the US. Are you sure you have checked the exchange rate recently? Have a look also on the net and check out the price of anything in the UK compared to US prices, esp' gas prices. I can't think of a single thing costing less in London than the price in USA.
So I can only assume you are loaded, if so London will soon help you dispose of your cash.
Apart from that good luck to you!!
Bring clothing. It is bloody freezing at the moment. Other than that prepare for high prices, bad housing condition, but a great time all in all. I lived here for 6 years now and yet have to regret the move.
Cheap Clothes and Houseware: Matalan
Cheap food: Any large market (Sainsbury's, Morrisons), the cornershops are open all the time but charge you through the nose.
Best cheap food: Wagamama
Don't bother with a car, spend more time on a flat in a close location to the tube instead (zone 3 or even 2). Driving your car through the center costs 拢7 a day!
MONEY! You will need to set up a job first, and then find a place you can afford.
Its nice to visit, but costly to stay!
Try and live in the American Embassy. That way you won't have to pay the congestion charge.
