I want to know how to post the trot and I need to learn it but every time I try it, my balance shifts and I can't do it! Also, I've been trotting pretty good for a while, but my instructors haven't shown me how to canter! What can I do?Can anyone give me advice with a riding lesson problem?
I'm kind of confused. You say that you need trotting help, but you also say that you've been trotting well for a while. There's a difference between trotting for a long time and trotting well for a long time. No matter how long you trot, if you never do it right, then you can't learn to canter.
Make sure that your weight is sinking all the way down in your heels! That's pretty much the base for all English riding, and will be especially useful when you learn to canter. If you got the heels, then you got the trot. :) Make sure that you're not over-posting--just let the horse's trot ';lift'; you up. If you need your horse to go faster, squeeze and make your post faster. If you need to slow down, slow down your post. What I'm trying to say is: the post is YOURS. You control the speed, using the weight in your heels to keep you secure.
Don't worry, you'll canter eventually. =) I was trotting for a little under a year before I learned to canter. Ask your trainer what you need to work on specifically. Cantering is fun, but before you learn that you need to have a secure, confident posting trot. Working on your sitting trot wouldn't hurt, either.
Good luck! Can anyone give me advice with a riding lesson problem?
if you are becoming of balance in the trot you are probably not ready to learn the canter safely but don't worry, you'll get there soon.
its hard to give advice without watching you ride but try not to think too much about the posting, instead focus on feeling the horses movement and follow that. Make sure you keep your posture correct and keep looking forward. Do you know about trot diagonals? It does make posting more comfortable. Basically if you rise when the horses outside foreleg is forward and are down when it's back (and the opposite leg is forward) you will be on the right diagonal. You can check this by taking a quick look down at the horses shoulders while you ride.
Some last tips: don't get frustrated when riding just relax and it will come more easily, have fun and enjoy the learning process and every moment you spend with horses :)
try doing some sitting trot for a while, to build balance. I know i might be hard to balance, but you need to learn how to do it. if you can't do posting trot, there is no way you should be cantering as well. Try posting while holding a chunk of the mane. As you feel more comfortable, try with only one hand, and as you build muscle and balance, you can try to ride without any hands. If you want more tips, email me @ wait_wait_nowpanic@hotmail.com
