Well, definitely try out! You don't want to cheat yourself of the oppurtunity!
My advice would be, get a good comedic monolgue, that is age appropriate and fits your type. The practice it a lot.
Then get a good audition song. I'd recommend something from a show like The Last 5 Years, The Wedding Singer, Hairspray or Bare. They are also upbeat, energetic musicals, with the same stylings. Once you have chosen a song, practice that a lot.
Some other advice would be:
Know what to expect. Find out any necessary information ahead of the time, and have a number you can call or an address you can email in case any questions come up.
Be prepared, have your song, monologue, maybe a resume ready. Also bring dance or tennis shoes with you in case your asked to dance, and pants or shorts for the same reason if you are wearing a dress or skirt.
Dress professionally, no jeans! Wear something like a nice top and skirt or something along those lines. Also, black looks very professional.
Know your audition space. Check it out ahead of time so you are comfortable with where you will be and can relax day of the audition.
Remember the audition panel/Casting director is not the enemy, don't get mad or bad talk someone if they don't cast you, it could hurt your future chances, this is a small industry, and word gets out.
Take comments with a grain of salt. Fellow auditioners may say things to physch you out, or insult you. The panel may do the same as well. It hurts, but you have to keep face and move on.
Concentrate as best as possible! If you are distracted you're not giving your best performance possible!
Also, be sure to thank the CD/panel for their time, and thank your pianist for their time and playing your music. If you are taught a dance, be sure to thank the dance captain as well. Politeness goes a long way!
Good luck, hope you get cast!My school is doing a presentation of Grease, any tryout advice?
I'm glad I could help! Good Luck!

the music for grease is easy -- go for it. the dancing would be harder and you already know how to do that.
i say go for it! if you don't try out you will regret not having done it.
I say go for it!!! Your family wouldnt say go for it if they didnt really think so!! They wouldnt want you embarrased you are obviously good!!!
Learn the songs before you go to calm your nerves of not being able to remember the words!! They are quite simple so it shouldnt be hard!!
And the 7/8 years of dancing is good as i bet some people dont have any!! and there is lots of dancing in it!!!
Do you want to do it though? dont do it just to please your friends/family do it for yourself!!!
Make sure you know what you have to do for the audition....sing/dance/act/prepare a piece!!!
good luck!!!
