How do I start to train my 8 week old choc lab? Any advice on anything please!?

Go to the library and check out some books. The earlier you start training the easier. 8 weeks is easier than 8 months... huge misconception by pet owners. Start by teaching him to Sit. Take a treat in your hand and hold it just above his nose, as he sniffs it move your hand back over his head a little and his rump should hit the ground. Say the word ';Sit'; and repeat all of the steps. For lay, have him sit and then bring your hand down with the treat in it inbetween his two front legs. WHen he sniffs you move it back further twoards his hind legs until he lays, or you can slowly move it out in front of him making an L shape. Say ';LAY'; or ';DOWN'; firmly. Always reward him with verbal praise. If you have anymore questions feel free to email at ksimmons@roanoke.edu. Ive trained many dogs and it's alot of fun but you have to be patient. Books and videos from the library really help. DOn't buy them in the store because they are overpriced!! :) You can also search online for tips! Good luck! :)How do I start to train my 8 week old choc lab? Any advice on anything please!?
Puppy kindergarten classes are offered at 12 weeks of age at PetsMart in our area. Also some of the obedience schools offer this type of beginner class. This is a pre-obedience class. Try to take your puppy out as much as possible for socialization. Ask the breeder of your puppy or your veterinarian for recommendations. Labs are great dogs and very easy to train. Go to the library and get books by Ian Dunbar, Turid Rugaas, and anything that says Positive Training (for Dummies). You may be able to get your library to do an interlibrary loan for these authors.

1. Socialize your pup with lots of people and kids. After all of his shots, socialize him with lots of other pups and friendly dogs.

2. teach him Bite Inhibition, now, so that he won't nip as an adult.

3. Teach him not to jump. When you come to see him, kneel down on his level so he won't have to jump.

4. Touch him everywhere, play with his feet and mouth, so the Vet won't have problems.

5. You can teach him to sit, stay, down, and come in a few weeks. It will take a few years to teach him to understand with distractions. And teach him to walk with a leash in the house...

If you have specific questions, then post them so that we can answer them more completely one at a time...
find a local training school... they are wondeful and worth the money...

also use a crate for housetraining... you will thank me for it.
