I want to work in the film industry- does anyone have any advice at all?

I'm in the UK, and at the end of year 12.

Really soon I need to apply for university- is a film/media degree necessary?

Or would something less specific like English or History be ok, because I guess work experience is more important than grades.

Also, how would I go about getting work experience?

I'm willing to do what it takes, but I just don't want to close any doors for myself at this stage.

Honestly, the only reason to go to school for film/media is just for the degree. The majority of the big names out there didn't go to college for what they do. Quentin Tarantino doesn't even have a high school diploma, Keenan Ivory Wayans was a manager at McDonald's. It definitely isn't necessary to go to school for it, but it will help just a bit. But working with the actual equipment is the best experience, if you can't afford 20,000 worth of equipment right now, then going to school for it might be what you need for the hands on experience.I want to work in the film industry- does anyone have any advice at all?
A specialized degree always helps...

If you do well in school, you can probably apply for some summer internships. Try to pick a University with a strong film/media department and a good internship program.

Concentrate on getting good grades. Good Luck!
