What are the chances of becoming a famous fashion designer? Help? Advice?

I have wanted to be a fashion designer but I am just thinking - how big are the chances of actually making it and being famous? Is it just like acting or modelling - all about the coincidence of factor of luck? Or is it that if you go to a good design school and have good ideas that you will necessarily be noticed? What happens after you go to design college? Any experiences or knowledge? What are the chances of becoming a famous fashion designer? Help? Advice?
It depends on what you want. Many of the ';top designers'; have no fashion design skill. Many can't sew or draft a pattern. They lucked out and found a team of people willing to listen to their ideas. I think it's a myth to think that in order to be a top fashion designer you must go to design school. Look at the links I posted.

There's a market for clothing obviously. There are many ways to participate in the industry. If you live in New York your chances of hitting it big are greater than if you live in the mid west. If you desire to have your clothes distributed world wide that's something else entirely. A few weeks ago I saw this show and this guy was talking about millionaire's %26amp; pants. Some girl made her own pants %26amp; by chance someone else saw her wearing them %26amp; ordered them. From there she's made millions. This girl didn't go to design school or have a business plan. Thing just happened. It's all in how you look at it. Of course by going to school you're trying to advance your chances of being a ';success.'; It all depends on what your idea of success is.
